We named the property “Antica ferrovia” (Ancient railway) because, until just over twenty years ago, the current cycle path, which runs along the garden, was used by trains on the Pontebbana railway, connecting Udine to Tarvisio and Austria.<\/p>\n

The railway, of European importance, was built starting in 1872, entered service in 1879, and maintained the same route until the year 2000, when it was moved to a new route, largely built in tunnels.<\/p>\n

Only from that point onward was the project to reuse the old route for the construction of the current Alpe Adria cycle path launched.<\/p>\n

The Pontebbana railway<\/strong><\/p>\n

For 121 years, from 1879 to 2000, trains on the Pontebbana railway, an important link between Italy and Austria, passed along the embankment bordering the garden of the building we now call the “Antica ferrovia.”<\/p>\n

The history of the railway began in Vienna way back in 1864, the very same year the building was built, as a project for the construction of a railway from Villach to Udine.<\/p>\n

At that time, not only Tarvisio (which it would remain until 1918) but also Udine and Friuli (for another two years, until 1866) were Austrian territory.<\/p>\n

With the birth of the new Kingdom of Italy and the move of the border to Pontebba, that initial project was halted, and the Austrian government faced competing options: connecting Tarvisio to Trieste through the Isonzo Valley (avoiding encroachment into Italian territory, since Trieste also remained Austrian until 1918), or through Pontebba and Udine.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Austrian railways reached Tarvisio from the east (the section from Ljubljana to Jesenice opened in 1870) and from the north (the section from Villach to Arnoldstein opened in 1873).<\/p>\n

The turning point came in 1872 when the signing of the agreement with the Banca Generale di Roma allowed the Italian side to begin construction of the Pontebbana railway between Udine and Gemona, accelerating the Austrian government’s decisions.<\/p>\n

Both states then moved very quickly, given the difficulties of the route with its continuous viaducts and tunnels.<\/p>\n

The Udine \u2013 Gemona section was opened in 1875, Carnia was reached in 1876, Resiutta in 1877, Chiusaforte in 1878 and Pontebba in 1879, where a few months later the Austrian government completed the Tarvis \u2013 Pontafel section (the Austrian name for Tarvisio and the part of the town of Pontebba located after the border).<\/p>\n

Tarvisio had three stations: Tarvisio Citt\u00e0 (opened in 1873), Tarvisio Centrale (opened in 1873), and Tarvisio Boscoverde (formerly part of the old Rudolfiana railway in 1873 and then rebuilt in 2000), which is now the only station in Tarvisio. The stations of Fusine Laghi (1870\u20131967) and Camporosso (1879\u20132000) were later active within the municipality of Tarvisio.<\/p>\n

The old Pontebbana railway, as built in 1800 and with some subsequent upgrades and modernizations, remained active until 2000.<\/p>\n

On November 26, 2000, the new section from Carnia to Tarvisio, largely built in tunnels, entered service, leading to the closure of the old line and all its stations.<\/p>\n

And the Alpe Adria cycle<\/a> path was built on the site of the old Pontebbana line.<\/p>\n
